Kubala's Music

[Quote about music]

Whether you like it or not, you have to admit music is a pretty incredible thing. There's no other case of something so inane as patterns of density in the air inspiring such strong emotions. Myself, I listen to music almost constantly. Partially because I enjoy it, Partially because it provides an escape, a distraction from the thoughts that swarm around my head.

What does he listen to?

I think anybody that really listens to music will tell you no one kind is better than the others, for pure merit. It's only a matter of what you've been exposed to. Fortunately I was lucky to have experienced a broad variety of music from an early age, so my taste is similarly broad. If it's good, I'll listen to it, excluding a few genres like pure country that annoy the heck out of me. The list to the right is a small sampling.

What does he play?

Yes, in fact not only do I love to listen to music, I perform it, too. I half-wish I played some sexy and versatile instrument like the guitar or piano, but it was not to be. I took piano lessons for about a year, during 3rd grade, but couldn't stand to practice and ended up quitting. I was in the Austin Children's Choir top group for a year when I was twelve. That was fun, but I was a soprano. People laugh when I tell them that, my voice is so deep now - that's why I left after a year, because my voice was changing.

In 6th grade I started in the band playing Euphonium. You've probably never heard of it, but it actually is a common instrument. Looks like a little tuba, has the range of a trombone. Enjoyed it, and have been playing it ever since. I've gotten 1st chair in Region twice, and I've been 1st chair in every group I've been in. I'm not incredibly good, just pretty good, but the competition is so scarce that that was enough. I also play in the marching band, and love it - I'm a section leader this year. I've debated with my friends over which school music group is best to be in. It breaks down like so: orchestra is amazingly good (1st in State), but they don't have a lot of fun. The band is pretty good (11th in State, and Texas has tough competition), but we are incredibly close-knit, and always have fun. The choir, well, they aren't particularly great, and they don't have much fun either. Looks like the band wins.
